The game is set in a 1920s alternate story universe created by Polish artist Jakub Ruzalski and popularized through the board game Scythe. The source of inspiration for the artist’s paintings is the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1920, and the theme of the game is described as “dieselpunk mecha”. The story focuses on a conflict between three countries in Central and Eastern Europe: Polania, Rusvet and Saxony (they are based on real countries, Poland, a mixture of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union and Germany, respectively), which takes place sometime in the 1920s. after the First World War.
Anna Kos is a young girl who lived with her father Peter in Polania, which was occupied by the Rusvet army after a truce was signed with Saxony to end a large-scale war in which her brother Janek was killed. Once the troops of Rusvet raided the village where Anna lived in search of a scientist, who turns out to be Peter, who has a prosthetic arm that can disable military robots. Peter was captured by Colonel Lev Zubov, who intends to send him to Nikola Tesla’s plant. Anna recruits Polan resistance fighters to save her father. They are joined by Anna Lech’s uncle, the leader of the resistance, but they found him too late, Peter was mortally wounded by Colonel Zubov, who stole his hand. Peter asked Anna to warn his colleague Heinrich Steinmetz in Kolno before his death.
Wanting to avenge her father, Anna joins the resistance. Upon reaching Kolno, Anna is shocked to find that Rusvet has delivered not only the necessary food supplies, but also weapons to arm the local population. Anna protests against this, and Lech announced that he plans to arm civilians and convince them to fight, which will provoke Rusvet to purge the entire city, thereby breaking their truce with Saxony and inciting Polania’s hatred towards them. Anna objects to Lech’s plan and knocks him out. She then meets Heinrich, who develops a plan to rescue the inhabitants of Kolno. While Heinrich evacuates civilians in an airship, Anna, Lech and the Resistance stay behind to cover the evacuation. However, Colonel Zubov manages to capture Anna and Lech.
Zubov revealed that he manipulated the resistance to attack Kolno and break the truce, as he is part of the Fenris faction, which seeks to renew the war. He executed Lech, but when he was about to kill Anna, Polania’s army, led by Commander Michal Sikorski, attacked, forcing Colonel Zubov to retreat. While Colonel Zubov can escape, Anna cornered one of his lieutenants, who, to her shock, turned out to be Janek.
Rusvet (Main campaign)
Janek reports that four weeks earlier he was present at the peace talks with the Polyana security service when the talks were thwarted by a rebel attack. Working alongside Rusvet’s officer Olga Morozova, they managed to rescue Tsar Nicholas from his burning palace, but in the end he collapsed on him, presumably killing him. Realizing that Fenris was behind the attack, Tsar Nicholas instructed Olga to track them down and destroy them. Meanwhile, Janek, who was on the verge of death, was rescued by the scientists of Rusvet, under the command of Colonel Zubov, who used Tesla’s technologies to turn him into a cyborg.
Olga infiltrated the facility and informed Janek that Tesla had come out of hiding to warn world leaders of the existence of Fenris, whose sole purpose is to overthrow the current world order. She also introduced Janek to the inner circle of Colonel Zubov. Olga followed Colonel Zubov, discovering that Tsar’s advisor Nikolai Rasputin was a member of Fenris. Olga left to warn Frederick of Saxony, while Janek remained with Colonel Zubov as he searched for Heinrich, discovering in the process a secret missile project in Saxony. Although Henry was not at the base, they found information about his whereabouts and the location of Peter in Polania.
Janek insisted to Anna that he stay with Colonel Zubov in order to continue collecting information about Fenris, even when Anna tells him about the deaths of Peter and Lech. After connecting with Colonel Zubov, Janek helps track down and capture Heinrich. Heinrich reveals that they need a transponder to infiltrate Tesla’s factory, but that won’t protect them from the Icarus Protocol. Heinrich then commits suicide before being questioned. However, Colonel Zubov understands that Peter’s prosthesis can serve as a repeater. Using a transponder, Janek can disable defenses around Tesla’s factory. Colonel Zubov’s troops capture Tesla. Learning that Tesla can take off his cyborg costume, Janek tries to kill Colonel Zubov, but turns off. However, before Colonel Zubov can kill Janek, he is held at gunpoint by a Saxon general.
Saxon General Gunther von Duisburg remembered the war.
