Hellpoint

Hellpoint is an action / RPG PC game developed by Canadian studio Cradle Games and released by tinyBuild for Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2020. In 2021, the Nintendo Switch version was released; in development are versions for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S and Google Stadia. The game combines the gameplay typical of the games of the Souls series and the like, with the entourage of space horror. The player controls an unnamed humanoid who finds himself on the abandoned space station Irid Novo and must fight the hostile creatures that have flooded it in order to unravel the mystery of the events that took place at the station. Irid Novo orbits a massive black hole; the position of the station in orbit affects the strength of the enemies. The game received mediocre reviews from critics; Reviewers praised the game’s inherent dark atmosphere, but considered the game’s weaknesses secondary gameplay and multiple technical problems.

In Hellpoint, the player controls the Scion, an artificial humanoid creature created by the mysterious Author. The player is tasked with exploring the station Irid Novo, devastated by the catastrophic “Confluence”, and figuring out what is happening on it – for this, the hero must move through the space station, fighting against ordinary enemies and bosses that threaten the character; he can use various weapons – both cold, like axes and shields, and firearms. The level of understanding of events at the station is measured by a separate percentage indicator, which grows with victories over bosses and new types of enemies, reading notes and messages, and access to the last test of the game opens only when this indicator reaches 100%.

In terms of gameplay, Hellpoint is very similar to the Souls games. Just like in the games of the Souls series, the player must keep track of the character’s stamina scale, attack in time and dodge enemy attacks. In the event of the death of a character, he returns to life at the “gaps”, similar to the fires from the Souls series; “Axions” received for killing enemies, which play the role of experience points and money, remain at the place of the last death; bosses hide behind energy shields, similar to the “walls of fog” from Souls. Unlike Souls, resting at the gap does not immediately revive all enemies in the game world or restore a limited supply of healing items – both of which happen gradually over time. Like the games in the Souls series, Hellpoint is very difficult: enemies can kill the game character with a few hits. The player can equip different weapons – each type of weapon has its own unique movements and strikes, and the use of one or another weapon over time opens up new passive bonuses and active skills.

Hellpoint encourages the exploration of the world by the player, inviting him to look for various secrets – for example, valuable items can be hidden behind secret doors or in seemingly inaccessible places that can be reached using the jump mechanic. Compared to Dark Souls, where level design encourages movement down into dungeons, Hellpoint levels often have valuable items at the top and the player must find a way to climb higher. Irid Novo station revolves around the black hole in real time – this orbital movement affects the gameplay and is marked on a special indicator that resembles a dial. This movement can also be observed whenever there is an opportunity to look out the window or to be on the surface of the station. Twice per cycle, the influence of the black hole reaches its peak – during these periods, stronger or more numerous enemies appear, and previously inaccessible zones are opened for the player. One of the game’s characteristic enemies – a ghostly double of the game character – appears in the places where the Scion was last killed. In Hellpoint there is a multiplayer mode, implemented in a similar way to the Souls series – players can leave messages-icons to each other, as well as directly connect over the network – how to help another player in the passage, and “invade” a foreign world and attack the owner as an enemy …

The release of the game was postponed several times, including due to the COVID-19 pandemic [10]; While versions for most platforms were released on July 30, 2020, the Nintendo Switch version was delayed for additional testing and fixing online issues.
