Dota Underlords is a computer game developed by Valve. The game was originally released in 2019 as part of the Early Access program. The full version was released in 2020 for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS platforms. Dota Underlords is a standalone version of the Dota Auto Chess modification for Dota 2, developed by Drodo Studio.
8 users take part in one match at the same time. Each player must put on his side of the chessboard different heroes of the Dota 2 universe, each of which has its own characteristics and abilities. The battles in the game take place in a 1v1 format. After the end of the battle, players receive gold coins, which can be used to buy new heroes, while the losing player loses health points. Having lost all 100 points, the player is eliminated from the match. The match continues until there is only one player left.
Dota Underlords is developed by Valve Corporation for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS platforms. The game is based on Dota Auto Chess, a popular game mode created by the Dota 2 community, another game that they developed and released in January 2019. As Dota Auto Chess quickly became popular with over 7 million players by April 2019, Valve met with the mod’s developers, China’s Drodo Studio, to discuss working together on a standalone version. However, the two companies were unable to come to an agreement, and both said it was in their best interest to develop their own separate games. The game was developed using the internal Source 2 game engine. Underlords was the first game based on this engine to be released on mobile platforms.
Valve announced the development of its own version of the Dota Auto Chess modification in May 2019 . Dota Underlords was released as part of the Early Access program. Holders of the 2019 Dota 2 Battle Pass got access to the closed beta test on June 13, 2019. On June 17, 2019, the owners of the Battle Pass also received 3 keys each for accessing the beta version, which they could distribute to other users. On June 20, 2019, an open beta test started on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android platforms.
Valve has said it plans to have the game in Early Access for a few months, and to a launch later in 2019, Underlords will add features such as replays, ranked matches, daily challenges and rewards, and also a battle pass. Dota Underlords provides full cross-platform play between PC and mobile users, allowing players to play freely on one platform and end on another.
