9 Monkeys of Shaolin

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a beat ’em up computer game developed by the Russian team Sobaka Studio and published by Ravenscourt [1], Buka [2], Teyon in Japan, Sonkwo in China. Supported Platforms Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, macOS, Linux [3] [4] [5].

The game is the story of the formation of a simple fisherman into a Shaolin master in the spirit of the films of the seventies. The gameplay consists of active battles with different types of enemies and bosses during Medieval China. The game can be played both in single-player mode and in co-op mode together.

Green Clan – Ragged Pirates;

The Red Clan are also pirates, but more professional;
The Yellow Clan is a mystical ninja sect;
White clan – large samurai clan Shimazu;
The Black Clan are the remnants of the Enryaku-ji monks, as well as their companions.
Each clan leader wears one of the masks of the Japanese Noh theater, which reflects his personality. The leaders’ names are aliases that are taken from the name of their masks.

There are 6 types of enemies in the game, differing in appearance, health indicators and techniques: Thugs, Ashigaru, Ninja, Samurai, Ghosts, Sohei. Within each type, enemies differ in weapons, techniques and attack options. For example, an ashigaru can be armed with a spear, sword or arquebus: in each case, the manner of fighting and appearance is different.

At the end of each mission, the player receives improvement points, which can be spent in the camp with the monk trainer. A conversation with him brings up a branched tree of techniques on the screen, in which the main subject of improvements are combinations and techniques for each of the three stances:

Basic rack. Basic stand available right from the start. Activated by default. Classic strikes with weapons.
Acrobatic stance. Unlocks at the very beginning of the second chapter. Special staff moves that consume Chi.
Magic stance. It opens at the very beginning of the third chapter. It allows you to create seals on the ground – circular areas with a radius of about 5-7 meters, which act for some time and produce a certain effect within themselves. Spend Chi energy.
There are three types of items: weapons (staves, spears), shoes, and rosary. For each level, the player can take one item of each type. All items are given solely as rewards for winning a level.

The player starts out with a regular wooden (rattan) staff, which also served as his pole for traveling on a fishing boat. For winning a level, he will receive other weapons as a reward: various types of staves, spears and halberds, each of which has its own characteristics.

Multiplayer in the game is available as a cooperative passage of the same storyline campaign as in single player mode. A co-op can be played by two players either online or on a local network. The second player controls one of the monks named Daoshan (voiced by Denis Stroyev). [Source not specified 438 days]

The time of the game takes place in 1572, according to the Chinese calendar, this is the year of the Monkey (water). The plot combines both real historical references to places and events, and mysticism, as is customary in the genre of Chinese fantasy – Wuxia. [Source not specified 438 days]

The village is attacked by bandits, the main character Wei Chen (voiced by Daniil Eldarov [source not specified 369 days]), in search of his grandfather, moves along the coast destroying enemies. As a result, he sees how a Samurai in a red mask with a spear kills his grandfather and severely wounds Wei.

The hero comes to his senses and sees a group of monks in front of him. They say that their village is completely destroyed and no one survived, and also that they were not ordinary bandits, but wokou. A group of them was sent from Shaolin to help protect both Buddhist monasteries and the general population, but they didn’t make it in time. Wei Chen volunteers to help them, and says that his grandfather taught him the skill of using the staff, and that he repeatedly drove the bandits away from the village. To which the monks are reluctant to agree.
