Call of Duty: Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone is a multi-platform free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter and battle royale PC game developed by Infinity Ward and Raven Software and published by Activision on March 10, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Warzone allows for multiplayer online combat on the same battlefield, regardless of platform, between 150-200 players located in the fictional city of Verdansk.
The game has two main modes – Loot and Battle Royale. Warzone uses a new in-game currency that can be used at purchase stations in and around Verdansk. Players can also use the game’s currency to purchase items such as kill streaks or gas masks. At the time of launch, Warzone was only allowed to play in a squad of 3. A week later, on March 17, 2020, a solo mode was added to the game. Later, on April 8, 2020, at the same time as the patch for the third season of Modern Warfare, a squad of 4 was added to the game.
On April 10, 2020, the Activision company reported 50 million downloads of the game in the first month.
Warzone supports two basic game modes – Battle Royale and Loot. Warzone is the third game, following the Blackout modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018) and Battle Royale in Call of Duty: Mobile, from the Call of Duty series, which supports the battle royale mode. Warzone differs from Black Ops 4 by encouraging the accumulation of in-game currency, instead of finding equipment for weapons scattered around the map. Warzone uses battles with up to 150 players, unlike other games of this kind that only support up to 100 people in a single battle.
The essence of the battle royale mode is that players strive to remain the last survivors on a map, the playing space of which is constantly shrinking. Players parachute into a large play area, where they collide with other players. There are fewer players in the process, the playing space narrows, pushing the remaining players together. In the game, the zones on which the battle is no longer possible are filled with green gas, which eventually takes away health points, as a result of which the player dies. The player can open and close the parachute an unlimited number of times while his character is in the air. At the time of launching the game, only the three-man squad mode was supported. Later, a solo mode was added to the game. Along with the update of the third season, the number of modes in the game has increased to four – solo mode, squads of three or four players and a slightly tweaked loot mode for four people. The two player loot mode was added on April 20, 2020.
The death of a character in Battle Royale does not mean defeat at all. The game has a respawn mechanic that can be exploited in several ways. Killed players end up in the GULAG, where they engage in a single battle with another killed player. Both rivals have the same weaponry. The winner of such a battle returns to the playing field. Other respawn methods are only available using in-game currency. Players can buy respawn coupons for themselves or for other players. So they will not go through the process of the battle in the Gulag.
In mining mode, teams need to search for currency scattered across the game map to accumulate 1 million . The first team to reach the required amount goes into overtime, where it can increase its wealth by one and a half times. The team with the most money wins. Players in this mode will respawn automatically.
Each player starts the battle with an X16 pistol without additional equipment. The player can take any item found. Maximum equipment is standard – main and auxiliary weapons, lethal and tactical equipment, field upgrades and kill streaks. In Warzone, as in other battle royale games, there is armor in the form of armor plates. Players can also pick up currencies that can be used for various purposes.
The game was released on March 10, 2020 after a series of crashes and information leaks in the previous month. The existence of the game became known a month earlier, from a publication on Reddit, a software code glitch allowed players to access an early version of the game map. On March 8, 2020, two days before the official release of the game, the streamer under the nickname Chaos published an 11-minute video in which he talked about the features of the gameplay of the unreleased game Warzone. Subsequently, the video was removed. On March 9, publisher of the game Activision announced that the game will be released on March 10. A day after its release, on March 11, Activision announced that the game had been downloaded by over 6,000,000 people. 3 days later, it became known that Warzone had been downloaded by 15 million players.
