Crusader Kings 3
Crusader Kings 3 (from English – “Crusader Kings 3”) is a computer game in the genre of global real-time strategy, developed by the studio Paradox Interactive. The game was announced on October 19, 2019 at PDXCON 2019. The game was released on September 1, 2020.
According to Lead Game Designer Henrik Fareus, development began about a year before Imperator: Rome, which is 2015. The game uses a new, more powerful engine.
On the day of the announcement of the game, the site Rock, Paper, Shotgun published a material in which it was reported that the developers decided not to use the phrase Deus vult (the battle cry of the crusaders, currently popular among the ultra-right) in the game .This caused outrage among players, some of whom even organized an online petition, demanding Paradox to reverse its decision. As a result, Fareus issued a statement that “the issue was incorrectly clarified” and in fact the developers did not think about what terms to use in the game, except that they must be consistent with the historical context.
It is promised that Crusader Kings 3 will include significantly more content from the outset than was in Crusader Kings 2 on its release day. Features announced include:
The starting dates are 867 and 1066, but not 769 (which was added to Crusader Kings 2 by the “Charlemagne” expansion); as before, the game ends in 1453 (before the start of the game, you can turn off the end date and it will last until the player’s dynasty dies out); however, there will be no opportunity to start the game at any time between 1066 and 1453, as in CK2 ;
The game map covers a slightly larger territory than in CK2 (from Spain and Iceland to Myanmar and Mongolia, from Scandinavia to Central Africa), and is 4 times more detailed – in addition to counties, it also displays baronial possessions (but you still impossible); each county includes an average of 3 baronies;
Muslims, pagans, and other non-Christian rulers will be playable, but theocracies and trading republics will not; there will also be no specific game mechanics for nomads that were present in CK2;
Characters are represented by full-length 3D models instead of 2D portraits.
Each character can choose one of 5 available lifestyles, each with 3 skill trees;
The game stimulates role-playing through a new stress mechanic: when a character makes a decision that contradicts his character, his stress level rises ;
Dynamic system of religions: the player can create his own heresy and determine its features (for example, allow cannibalism or ordination of women);
Side branches of dynasties have been implemented: several houses can exist within a dynasty (for example, Yorks and Lancaster as side branches of the Plantagenets); each dynasty and each house has its own head, whose powers will include, for example, the possibility of legitimizing bastards;
An army is made up of levies, recruited from the player’s domain and vassal lands, and more professional men-at-arms, who can be of one of several types (such as crossbowmen or cavalry); the player himself chooses which units to hire, and due to this he has more control over the composition of the army than in previous parts ;
Characters with high combat skills can be made knights who join the player’s army as powerful combat units (20 knights per battle roughly correspond to 200 militias) .
The game is planned a deep system of love relationships, which will directly affect the gameplay. The player’s progress will always be displayed visually, so that it is clear what the decisions led to.
Northern Lords is the first small cosmetic add-on for the game focused on the countries of Scandinavia. Adds new events, decisions, characters and music. The add-on was announced on March 13 and released on March 16, 2021.
