On June 10, 2019, the first story trailer was presented at the E3 2019 conference, and the official name of the game was announced – Avengers. The release was scheduled for May 15, 2020, but was later pushed back to September 4.
On June 22, 2020, Square Enix announced that all users who purchase the PlayStation 4 version of the game will receive a copy for the PlayStation 5 for free.
In October 2020, it became known that the developers had postponed the release of major updates to the game, and postponed the release date of the game on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles to 2021.
Like the original Battletoads, the game is a scrolling beat ’em up game. Up to three players can play together as Rush, Pimple and Zitz, each with a different playstyle. The graphic style of the game is hand-animated and is more cartoon-like than previous games.
The game features an obstacle course, reminiscent of the famous Turbo Tunnel from the original game for its complexity, but instead of a side view, as in the original, the camera in the remake is located behind the bikes. The updated level has retained its nostalgic complexity, and the “Game over” screen contains an encouraging message for the player, as well as a set of parameters for changing the difficulty level.
For 26 years, battle toads have been locked in a fantasy simulator bunker. When they wake up, they realize that they are no longer intergalactic heroes and have sunk into obscurity. To regain their former glory, the heroes did not come up with anything better than to re-challenge the ancient enemy, the Dark Queen. However, disappointment awaits them: the Dark Queen is harmless, her powers have been kidnapped by Topian, an evil alien race. Since it was the Topians who once imprisoned the toads in the bunker, the heroes decide to unite with the queen against a common enemy.
The game was developed by Dlala studio with the support of Rare. Dlala Studios previously worked on Overruled, another beat ’em up game. Prior to the game’s announcement at E3 2018, no Battletoads game had been released since 1994, and past games were last released as part of the 2015 Rare Replay compilation. Rare decided to reimagine the classic Battletoads gameplay without the limitations of the 1980s hardware. The first game trailer was unveiled at June E3 2019, and it was playable at X019 in November. The game was originally planned to be released in 2019, but then the release was postponed to August 20, 2020 for Xbox One and Windows.
