Worms Rumble

Worms Rumble is an action and battle royale video game in the Worms series, developed and published by Team17. The game was released on December 1, 2020 on Windows, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. On June 23, 2021, the game was released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and Nintendo Switch.

Unlike many other games in the series, battles in Worms Rumble take place in real time. A player within a large location controls one worm, which has a varied arsenal, with which it is necessary to kill other worms, while trying to survive on his own. For participating in in-game matches, experience points and in-game currency are awarded, allowing you to gain access to new items to change worms and weapons. The choice of the player is given such modes as “Training”, “Fight to the death”, “The last squad” and “The last worm”.

The gaming press has left mixed but mostly positive reviews about Worms Rumble. While reviewers praised the game’s fun gameplay and high-quality technical performance, the game was criticized for its oversimplified mechanics and lack of content.

Game process

Match in the “Fight to the death” mode. Unlike most other titles in the series, Worms Rumble provides real-time gameplay
Worms Rumble is a side-scrolling 3D action game. Unlike most other games in the series, in Worms Rumble, battles take place in real time, and not in turn-based form. The player controls one worm, which has a different arsenal, including weapons, grenades, equipment and useful items. The arsenal can be found in boxes that appear in random places of the location, or in the place of a killed worm (when a worm dies, its arsenal drops out of it). When dealing damage to a worm, its health is drained, and if it reaches zero, then the worm will be killed. After the death of his worm, the player has the opportunity to watch the further course of the battle. Unlike other games in the series, when falling from a great height, the worm does not lose health, but is briefly stunned. Among other things, the worm can move around the location in the roll, use hidden places (when the worm is found in them, other worms cannot see it) and quickly move around the location using elevators, escalators, cables and trampolines. Locations in the game also contain numerous destructible objects that differ from indestructible ones by their characteristic radiance, and dynamic objects that change the structure of the location during the battle (for example, trains and missiles).

The worm’s arsenal is very diverse. Weapons are the main means for destroying enemies. Ammunition is classified into ballistic, explosive, and special ammunition. Weapons include, for example, a baseball bat (a special, permanent, endless arsenal item that allows you to repel enemy worms and projectiles) and an assault rifle (ballistic ammunition, has a high rate of fire, but low damage). Reloading weapons (with the exception of a baseball bat) is done automatically after the current clip runs out, or at any time by the player himself. With the complete expiration of cartridges, this or that weapon becomes inaccessible until the next finding of cartridges or disappears altogether [6]. There are three types of grenades: a grenade (standard, explodes a few seconds after being thrown), a banana bomb (after a powerful explosion, it scatters into several more exploding bombs) and a holy grenade (has a powerful explosion). The equipment includes a grappling hook (it clings to a hard surface, pulling a worm to itself on a chain) and a jetpack (allows you to stay in flight until the fuel runs out). Useful items include a first-aid kit (restores health by 50 units) and an energy drink (creates a shield, which is an additional health that takes a hit on itself). At the same time, the worm can carry two types of weapons (in addition to a baseball bat) and one type of grenades, equipment and useful items.

There are four modes in Worms Rumble. In the “Tutorial” you can get acquainted with the principle of the game, try out various weapons and destroy targets in the allotted time; it is the only single player mode, and contains only one location. In the “Fight to the Death” mode, players compete in the number of kills, and after death, the worm is revived in a random location. In the modes of destruction – “The Last Squad” and “The Last Worm” – initially you need to choose your starting position in one of the location zones, and the match itself takes place in a constantly decreasing arena (certain location zones are filled with a storm – a green space that damages the worm) ; a feature of the destruction modes is the ability to deliver supplies – it is carried out by activating special platforms located in different locations.
