Amnesia: Rebirth is a survival horror computer game developed and published by Frictional Games for Microsoft Windows, Linux and PlayStation 4 on October 20, 2020. The third game in the franchise and the second in the series from the same studio.
The action takes place in March 1937, 98 years after the events of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. French archaeologist Anastasia (Tasi) Trianon sets off on an expedition to colonial Africa. After the plane crashes in the desert in Algeria, Tasi wakes up unconscious in the cabin and discovers that all her companions are missing. Determined to find her husband Salim, she overcomes dangers in order to get on the trail.
Moving through the caves, the heroine realizes that she somehow took possession of the wanderer’s amulet – a device that allows her to travel through the so-called gaps in space into a dead alien world. In the process of wandering, she discovers that the long absence of light greatly cloudes her mind, but at the same time the body has the ability to quickly heal from wounds and even fractures. Also, the second pregnancy of the heroine becomes apparent, who gave birth to her daughter Alice a few years earlier, who died early from a hereditary disease. Tasi eventually finds Salim’s corpse, who died of his wounds while the others sought help. Distraught with despair, she continues to try to find the rest of the expedition. Coming out of the cave, Tasi stumbles upon an abandoned French fort, the entire garrison of which was killed by an unknown force. On the radio, she manages to contact the survivor of the expedition, Dr. Metzir, who instructs to look for him in a nearby village. Tashi goes deep into the fortress in search of a way out and soon meets mutated ghouls moving through the system of manholes and tunnels and attacking people. While trying to get out of the fort, the woman falls into ancient ruins that once belonged to a highly developed but now extinct civilization. The object was built by an alien race of Gate Builders, who were able to cross worlds and prolong their life thanks to the power of vitae – an energetic substance that they received by massively torturing people. Some unknown calamity caused the Gateway on their homeworld to fail, destroying the Builders and spreading the Shadow, a dangerous force that comes through red tumor-like growths. Tasi also stumbles upon traces of an expedition from the 19th century led by Professor Thurston Herbert, during which his assistant Daniel found and smashed a piece of the portal in the form of a crystal sphere, which incurred the wrath of the Shadow. Moving on, Tasi stumbles upon a ghoul, who recognizes her and calls her by name – this is one of her colleagues named Leon, who immediately arranges a hunt for her former companion. In the process of persecution, she tries to save another found expedition member Richard from torture, but kills him in a fit of rage when he betrays her and wants to leave him to die in his place.
Tashi can activate a portal to get to the village, but she starts to struggle due to the stress of the trip. As she continues walking, she meets another member of the group, Yasmin, who has almost turned into a ghoul. Yasmin confesses that she has lost control of herself, killing all the villagers, and warns Tasi to run away from her. Doctor Metzir arrives in time and shoots Yasmin in the middle of the attack. He gives birth, but kidnaps his daughter, named Amari, claiming that the girl is needed to undo the ghoul curse imposed on the expedition. Tasi pursues the doctor with all her strength, who uses the selected pilgrim’s amulet to travel to the world of the Gate Builders.
During the chase, Tashi regains her memories. Soon after the plane crash, the Empress Tiana came to the crash site, wanting to become a mother, as an unknown ailment made her sterile. She gave Tasi the same wanderer amulet and promised to save the group in exchange for a newborn child. Still traumatized by the loss of her first daughter, Tasi backed out of the deal. Then Tiana, under the pretext of treating wounds and restoring strength, invited all members of the expedition to get drunk from a special source, after which they began to gradually turn into ghouls, obedient to her power. However, Tasi escaped and hid in the fuselage of the crashed plane.
Tasi catches up with Dr. Metzir and kills him in anger. The Empress warns that her daughter is doomed to the same fate as the first child. She offers to leave Amari in the complex, since she has a supply of vitae to suppress the girl’s illness and allow her to live a full life. Tasi is given a choice: leave Amari, deal with the Empress, or flee with her daughter. The game has five endings, depending on the player’s choice and the characteristics of the passage.
If Tasi leaves her daughter, Tiana will praise her for the right choice and completely turn her into a ghoul to quickly get rid of her torment.
